Boccia Athletes Head to CPISRA World Cup in Ireland

The Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) is sending a team of two athletes to compete in the Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA) sanctioned tournament from 18 August to 26 August 2011.

Nurulasyiqah Mohammad Taha and Toh Sze Ning will be heading for Belfast with four other officials who will assist them in the competition.

World-ranked number 3 Nurulasyiqah in action

Known for her dedication, world-ranked number 3 Nurulasyiqah (Nurul) is set to improve her ranking at this world championship to qualify for the London 2012 Paralympics. Nurul, with a BC3 classification, has very severe locomotor dysfunction in all four limbs. The plucky lady began her training regularly in 2004 with SDSC after being introduced to boccia. With a love and passion for the sport, her desire is to continue to improve her skills and promote the sport recreationally and competitively.

Sze Ning, who is just four years into competitive boccia, is looking to achieve a world ranking at this meet. At just 14, this young lively teen has competed in the Asia-Pacific region. This coming competition will be her second attempt on the world stage. With more experience and guidance from teammate Nurul, it is hoped that Sze Ning will reach a new level in her game.

Mr Frankie Thanapal Sinniah, President of SDSC – “This is not the first time that the duo is representing Singapore to compete with other Boccia players across the region. We are happy to be able to send world number three Nurul and budding talent Sze Ning, to this competition, gearing them up for London 2012. It is also our honour to receive financial support since 2009 from element14 to further the cause of disability sports.”

Mr Salman Syed, Regional Head, element14 – “We are thrilled that Nurulasyiqah has qualified for the Boccia World Cup. Her focus and commitment has enabled her to achieve her dream of participating at the very top of her chosen sport. She is an inspiration to all of us at element14. Even the most daunting challenges can be overcome and the most ambitious goals achieved.

In her various interactions with our staff in Singapore, her quiet determination and quick mind impressed us all. We are certain that Nurul will excel at the World Championships. element14 is proud to support Nurul and help her realise her dreams.”
